Anybody recognise this story from a zine? I don't have any other pages other than the actual story and have searched Proslib and other resources. I admit I generally don't see a story without the title and author on the first page, unless there is another splash page I don't have. Thanks!

The Glare Of The Common

"Remember, remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder,treason and plot." Bodie and Doyle enjoying Bonfire night.

The air tasted ever so faintly of damp and spent gunpowder. It was Doyle who had suggested the local village bonfire night - a deliberate, almost painful attempt to inject some normality into their lives after three days straight of stakeouts and a particularly nasty pursuit.

Usually Bodie would be loving the idea but three days of disturbed sleep and running on adrenaline alone, he couldn't quite shift his low mood. "Normality Ray?. This is what you call normality,. We're standing in a field the size of a postage stamp, inhaling the fumes of a hundred quid's worth of burnt pallets, and i'm pretty sure that bloke over there in the donkey jacket is selling cider that's been cut with brake fluid."

Doyle adjusted his collar, pulling it higher against the cutting November wind that whipped across the common. The massive bonfire, now a roaring inferno centered on a hastily constructed effigy of Guy Fawkes, was the only thing keeping the crowd from turning into a frozen mass. "It's Guy Fawkes Night, Bodie," Doyle said, shoving his hands deep into the pockets of his woollen jacket. "It's tradition. No shooters, no intercepts, no Cowley breathing down our necks. Just fire and fifty pence sparklers."And a metric tonne of bad singing coming from that Beer tent," Bodie countered, his eyes , however, fixed on the flames. There was something about the sheer, untamed violence of the fire that appealed to him. It was honest, it was deadly, and it demanded respect. A lot like him, Doyle thought wryly.

A rocket screamed upward from the far side of the field, pausing at it's zenith before exploding in a glittering shower of gold and green. The crowd , mostly families and a smattering of shivering teenagers cheered."see" Doyle nudged him with an elbow, a small smile playing on his face. "Relax. Have a hot-dog" "Hot-dog?, now you're talking" Bodie smiled, taking the greasy paper plate Doyle offered.

They moved away from the main crush of people and found a spot on a low wall beneath the skeletal branches of an old oak tree, the heat of the fire reaching them in warm, aggressive waves. For a few moments they just watched. The sound of the flames deep constant crackle , was strangely calming. It was the opposite of the high-tension silence they usually preferred. "It's funny, isn't it?" Doyle murmured, watching the faces of the children illuminated by the sparks.
"What is?" Bodie asked, chewing slowly.
"This. All these people. They don't know what goes on in the dark, do they? They think 'dangerous' is an illegally parked car or a lost dog. They don't know about the paperwork, the sheer effort that goes into letting them stand here and watch a glorified fire"
Bodie paused, wiping grease from his mouth with the back of his hand. He glanced at Doyle, recognizing the sudden, familiar weight of the job pressing down on his partner, even here. Doyle was always the one who felt the gravity of their role most keenly - the protector of the mundane.
"They don't need to know, Ray. That's the point," Bodie said, his voice surprisingly soft. "We're the ones who deal with the dark so they can stand in the light and enjoy bonfire night. It's a transaction. We get the danger, they get the fire."
Doyle nodded slowly, appreciating the simple, brutally effective logic. Bodie never articulated the philosophy behind CI5 but he lived it. He was the danger that neutralized other danger. The quiet moment was, predictably interrupted.

A loud, drunken argument flared up near the beer tent - a couple of blokes in ill-fitting jackets squaring off over something stupid, probably a spilled pint. It was standard saturday night trouble, nothing for CI5. But the sight of the aggressive posture and the sudden, clumsy push was enough to snap them both out of their reverie. Bodie's hand instinctively drifted to where a weapon wasn't. Doyle was already half-off the wall. Their training was instantaneous, the shift from civilian to operative was a flick of the switch.
"Leave it, Ray" Bodie commanded quietly, his eyes assessing the scene instantly. "It's just local stuff. They'll soon run out of steam".
"They're going to clock each other," Doyle muttered, already calculating the quickest route through the throng.
"No, they're not. Look"
Bodie subtly leaned forward, catching the eye of one of the men. It was nothing aggressive, just the cold, dead-level stare of a professional who knew a thousand different ways to inflict pain and was currently evaluating the cheapest and fastest. The drunk saw the look - the complete lack of emotion,and something in his bravado faltered. He didn't know who Bodie was, but he knew he didn't want to find out.

The man grumbled something, his friend grabbed his arm and they stumbled away, the confrontation fizzling into a pathetic muttering fit. Doyle relaxed, settling back onto the wall. He shook his head, a wry smile returning. " you can't even have a night off without intimidating the locals, can you?"
"It's a talent, Ray. Don't knock it."
Bodie took the last bite of his hot-dog.
"Besides, if we had intervened, we'd have to file a report, and i don't fancy explaining 'dispute over spilled beer' to Cowley."

The bonfire was starting to collapse now, the centre sinking into a glowing bed of ash and embers. The flames were lower but the heat was more intense, a stubborn, enduring core.
"Right" Doyle said, rising and stretching, feeling the familiar aches from the week's work . "Time to hit the road. I'm freezing, and i need a proper drink, not whatever gut-rot they're selling here"
"Took you long enough" Bodie replied, pushing off the wall. He tossed his empty plate towards a bin but missed spectacularly. He didn't bother to retrieve it. "Lead on , Doyle. You drive, i think i've got a trace of brake fluid on my breath."

As they walked back towards the parked Ford, leaving the dwindling chaos and the smell of smoke behind, a final huge burst of fireworks went off, painting the black sky silver and gold.
Doyle didn't look up, his mind already shifting from the flickering fire to the cold, hard realities of the next day. But as he reached the car door, he heard Bodie sigh contentedly beside him.
"Not bad, Ray," Bodie admitted, the faintest hint of a smile on his face "for normality, that is."
And Doyle knew that was as close as he'd ever get to a 'thankyou'.

This month, the PBS streaming application Passport, added seasons 1 - 4 of "Inspector George Gently," starring Martin Shaw in the title role. I saw some of them years ago and thought Martin was fabulous. I disliked his younger partner, to the extent that I am not sure I finished them all. I thought I would give them another try. If you have Passport, I think it's a show definitely worth checking out.
